We all tend to neglect our gardens a little over winter so when spring comes around, they’re usually in need of a bit of a spruce up. If you have an artificial lawn then you have certainly saved yourself from a fair bit of hard work but there are still a few things you can do to get it looking nice as well as maintain it well so it will stay looking good for longer.
Don’t worry, this is nothing too taxing – in fact, it’s as easy as 1, 2, 3!
1. Give it a brush
Lawns of any kind can become cluttered with fallen leaves and debris, which can make it look untidy. Start your lawn tidy-up by giving it a good brush over. Not only will this sweep up any loose objects from the surface, but it will also do wonders for the appearance of the grass. Just as vacuuming a carpet lifts the fibres and makes the colour appear more vibrant, a good brushing over will make the pile more bouncy and upright and looking really nice. A stiff, natural fibre brush is recommended.
2. Pull up any weeds
While artificial grass is a lot less likely to suffer from weeds than a regular lawn, weeds can be tenacious and find their way up through the membrane underneath, pop up at the edges or grow from seeds that have been dropped by birds or dispersed by the wind. It’s best not to use any harsh weed killers on artificial grass as you could damage it. As weeds are likely to be few and far between, it’s not a big job to just go round and pull any up that have managed to grow.
3. Give it a clean
Just as your indoor carpets benefit from a wash, so will your artificial grass. It’s been exposed to the elements all winter so a good clean up will really do it a lot of good. Again, avoid harsh chemicals: soapy water is great for cleaning off superficial dirt. If you have pets that use the garden for toileting then you’d really do your lawn a favour by giving it a clean with a specific pet product. This will kill any bacteria on the grass as well as give it a pleasant scent.
If you don’t have any pets yourself, it’s not a bad idea to use this kind of product anyway. You can never eliminate the possibility that the neighbours’ cats may have been on there plus it will still give it a lovely clean.
Having artificial grass installed isn’t cheap so looking after it in this way will help maximise that investment by lengthening its lifespan. Plus, it will look (and smell) lovely for the spring and summer months.
